Volvo Cars recently stated that it will establish a joint R&D center with Northvolt in Gothenburg, Sweden. The center is part of Volvo's 30 billion Swedish kronor investment in battery R&D and manufacturing.
Information shows that the R&D center will be put into use in 2022 and will create hundreds of jobs in Gothenburg, making Volvo one of the few companies to integrate battery R&D and production. One of the car brands with product planning.
Earlier this year, the two companies announced their collaboration and signed a binding agreement. The two parties will establish a joint venture to develop and supply batteries for next-generation pure electric models of Volvo and Polestar brands.
At the same time, the location selection of the production base will be carried out next year. By then, the annual production capacity of the factory will be 500GWh, and it can supply batteries to 500,000 pure electric vehicles every year. According to the plan, the factory will start construction in 2023 and begin mass production in 2026.
